The Path Less Traveled

Maggie Wiken of the EMMC Budget Office was walking from her office in the back of the medical center to the cafeteria when she met two ladies who were obviously lost. As is our practice, Maggie stopped them and asked if she could help them find their way. The women looked at her sheepishly and said they were looking for a way out to the main entrance, but they didn’t want to go in an elevator or down a set of stairs where they could see outside. It seemed that one of the ladies had a great fear of heights.

The request stopped Maggie up short. Was there a way from the back of the hospital where they were to the front entrance without an elevator or a glassed stairwell? She thought a minute and finally came up with the path that would do the trick. It was far from the most direct route, but Maggie took the time. And as she led the ladies down back stairwells and hallways she was able to enjoy these customers, laughing and talking about the parts of the hospital they were getting to see.

The Moral of the Story:

  • “We either find a way or make one.”
  • Customers are not interruptions of our work, they are our reason for being here.
  • Lead by example.
  • Have fun.
