Not Everything That Counts Can Be Counted

Early one morning in a room on Grant 6, a cancer patient was lying in her misery. Don’t misunderstand—her medical needs were all being met. It was one of those days where everyone was running everywhere all at once. Melissa Day—the daytime charge nurse on Grant 6 stopped by while rounding. When she asked if there was anything she might do for the patient, the response reached to the core of her nurse’s heart. The dear, kind lady said, “Oh no dear, not really. I would love a back rub but you people are much too busy today for that.” The busy unit and its concerns disappeared in an instant as Melissa replied “ Of course, I have time, this is why I wanted to be a nurse.”

The back rub only took a minute or two but it meant a lifetime to the lady. Literally, for she passed away short while later.

The Moral of the Story:

  • Kindness can last a lifetime. It is easy to get lost in the rush of the moment. Don’t forget your core values.
  • All needs are important: Spiritual needs can matter as much as medical needs.
  • Kindness is the noblest weapon to conquer with.

Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.” -- Albert Einstein
