Never Say Can't
A Housekeeping employee in his first weeks at EMMC mentioned to his supervisors, Janet Caler and Pam Kirkwood, that he was interested in going from being a housekeeper to being a project worker – a move considered a promotion in the department. He confided that he felt quite nervous about mentioning it, but had drummed up the courage to let his supervisors know his ambition.
Though he lacked the proper skills for the job he wanted and probably wouldn’t have been an immediately viable candidate, Janet and Pam encouraged him to learn more. The employee began on his own, to finish his work early and would ask to follow one of the project workers, to practice the skills necessary to obtain this promotion.
A few months later, an opening came up and he applied. He demonstrated the skills successfully and, after receiving the promotion, remarked to Jane and Pam, “I appreciate your giving me the chance to prove myself. I never felt confident enough to try—But you allowed me to train and helped me succeed. I was told I couldn’t do it, but you let me try.”
Janet and Pam felt proud. It was more pride in the employee than in anything else. He did it. They just let him try.
