You will Never Be Alone at EMMC
“The worst pain is watching someone else in pain.”
The care we provide always makes us proud, but there are some examples of caring that simply stand out. A couple of years ago, a young man was admitted to our floor in cardiac distress. He and his wife were visiting from out of state and a long way from home. During his stay, his condition suddenly deteriorated and unfortunately he arrested and died. Bonnie Martin, RN was nurse who had been taking care of the man during the few past days. She was made aware of the patient’s death and knew that Lynn, his wife, was miles from home and any family.
Bonnie offered her own home to the bereaved woman for a few days while arrangements were made. And though, Lynn did not stay with Bonnie, she did accept the offer of Bonnie’s company and support at the hotel. Bonnie stayed at the hotel all evening the night of the man’s death. Meanwhile, Social Services quickly helped make arrangements for her husband’s body to be sent home. When Lynn ’s family arrived in Bangor , they came to the Cardiac Telemetry Unit to retell the story and thank Bonnie and other staff. Lynn presented Bonnie with a guardian angel pin, which she wears to this day, and when asked about it, she retells the story. They also still occasionally e-mail each other.
The Moral of the Story:
- Treat others as you, yourself, would like to be treated.
- Go above and beyond to exceed expectations.
