Kindness Lights the Way
Have you heard the story about the family from the far northern part of Maine that arrived at the EMMC’s Developmental Pediatrics office on Mt. Hope Avenue ?
The first part of a developmental pediatrics evaluation takes place on Mt. Hope Avenue .The next part takes place across town on Union Street . With all of the issues that can overwhelm a family with an ill child in an unfamiliar city, the fear of getting lost should not have to be a concern.
The child’s anxious mother, worried about finding her way to the second appointment, broke down and cried. That’s when Judy Jones, the receptionist and Tavi Kelley, the secretary, stepped up and offered their services. Judy ordered lunch and paid for it herself, drew maps and highlighted the key land marks, etc. Though grateful, Mom was still not comfortable. So, Tavi made the decision to drive to Union Street with the family following behind her vehicle in their own car. Judy and Tavi accomplished two things, one highly practical and specific, the other very conceptual and general. This family found their way to their second appointment of a stressful day thanks to a quick thinking and generous staff member. And they will likely never forget the sense of being cared for in an unexpected way by EMMC’s staff.
The Moral of the Story:
· A little kindness can make a world of difference.
· Not to forget, this could be you.
